Structure

Formed in 1971 to represent the working women and men of the fishing industry.

More than 20,000 members in Newfoundland & Labrador, with a full organizational network in hundreds of communities.

Approximately 10,000 fish harvesters, 10,000 fish plant workers, and about 1,000 workers in the brewing, hotel, window manufacturing and steel fabricating industries.

Elected committees in more than 50 fish plants.

Boat delegates elected on all operating trawlers (offshore) with a fleet delegate for each trawler port.

Approximately 300 inshore fishermen’s committees representing fishermen and women in more than 500 communities.

FFAW represents both boat owners and crew members in the inshore fishing sector

An 18 member Executive Board, including the President, Secretary Treasurer, Vice President Inshore, Vice President Offshore and Vice President Industrial/Retail elected by province wide mail out ballot as well as two affirmative action positions and a retiree position.

Policy-making Councils are elected in each of the Union’s three divisions inshore (34 members), offshore (6 members), and industrial/retail (32 members); includes affirmative action seats on industrial (2) and inshore (1) councils.

Full time staff of 20 with headquarters in St. John’s and regional field representatives

Full time communications & research officer.

Actively involved in negotiation of fish prices and collective agreements.

Actively involved in training and education of members (union related training is given by union members who have been trained as instructors, i.e. peer teaching or fishermen teaching fishermen, plant workers teaching plant workers).

Involved in a sentinel project with DFO to help assess fish stocks; fish harvesters working with scientists.

Actively involved in lobbying government on issues which affect members, i.e, Employment Insurance reform, fisheries management issues, Workers Compensation, etc.

Affiliated with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), Canada’s largest industrial Union with more than 250,000 members.

Member of Newfoundland & Labrador Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress.

Member of Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters, an organization of fish harvester organizations from Newfoundland to British Columbia, and the National Seafood Sector Council; both deal with workplace training issues for fishery processing and harvesting workers.

Instrumental in the creation of the Labrador Fishermen’s Union Shrimp Company Ltd. and the Community Credit Union.
