FFAW/CAW Executive Board Approves $10,000 Contribution to Haiti Disaster

January 15, 2010

The Executive Board of Fish, Food and Allied Workers has approved a $10,000 contribution to the earthquake disaster in Haiti in response to an urgent appeal made by our National Union, the Canadian Auto Workers.

The magnitude of the crisis in Haiti is even greater than originally identified. Reports now coming out of Haiti show that a disastrous earthquake has devastated the poorest country in this hemisphere. In a country without adequate health care, emergency services and infrastructure, people are traumatized, injured and lacking even basic assistance.

The Canadian Auto Workers issued an appeal to all CAW local unions to make the maximum donation to the CAW Social Justice Fund to assist the people of Haiti during this most difficult time. Their goal is to raise $250,000 with the hope of securing matching funds from the federal government of up to $100,000. To that end, the Executive Board of the FFAW/CAW has contributed $10,000 on behalf our members and their families.

While our members continue to live through very difficult economic times here in Newfoundland & Labrador, it is important to extend financial support to those in much more dire circumstances and to assist them to survive and to rebuild.
